"The Prophet Said...

...to plant a garden, so that's what we'll do!" (LDS Children's Songbook, page 237).Our lives have been in kind of a limbo since last October. We thought we might have a huge career change and move to another state. Then Chancho didn't feel so good about it. But we decided to still sell our house. Then, just as of today, we decided not to. Chancho took down the sign from in front of the house while we were putting in the wood floor but it was still on MLS. Today a realtor called, wanting to show the house. I called Chancho and he said, "no." Hurray! Finally we have a decision. We are staying here!

I have wanted a garden for a long time. You know why I didn't have one. Too sick and all that, then I thought we were moving. But I've been looking at my flowerbeds in the backyard for quite sometime and have been thinking, "Those are so full of weeds. What shall I do with them? Can't I just make them into a garden?" Well, today I did. We do have an area on the side of our house that will make a lovely garden one day. But not today. Too much work. Too late in the summer. So, for family night tonight, we planted a garden! Maybe you wouldn't consider a few tomato and pumpkin plants in a small flowerbed to be a garden, but it's a start. The kids LOVED it! They each have their own special plant that they have to water and weed and they hope that in the fall we will make salsa and pumpkin pie and have our own jack-0-lanterns. I hope it will be a success.
Anyway, we had a great little time and afterwards I read a story out of the Friend magazine about a family planting a garden and Pres. Kimball's counsel to plant one. I was surprised at how attentive the kids were and how strong the Spirit was. I actually was not counting on that, but it was there and I promised my kids that if we follow the prophet, even in doing something small like planting a garden, then we will be blessed. And I knew it was true.

i love gardens ... and because of our move we don't have one this year. it's great your kids are involved - and will make them appreciate it even more after they really have to weed and water their plants. :) you are great ... when i grow up i want to be more like you. :)

Oh the guilt I feel that I have not followed the prophets counsel in planting a garden!

I excuse myself because of all the drastic measures that must be taken against critters that eat everything in side - not bugs - critters. Big ones - that can get on your deck, dig under fences. And the birds - oh the birds! Don't get me started!

Do you think that an herb garden would count - becuase I could maybe do that right in my kitchen.....and I do so hate to deny myself of blessings.

Way to go, Idaho! I will anxiously look forward to the salsa and pumpkin posts!

Shan, we planted a garden the first time in our nearly nine years of marriage this year as well. mike built garden boxes which I highly recommend for the side of your house you talked about possibly doing another year. We've had very few weeds and filled them with some good stuff and I can't believe how excited it makes me. I might need to put a picture on my blog because it is so cool to just see all this tall out of control green stuff actually growing that you planted!! Also I am glad you aren't moving for now as I want to spend a little time with your hardwood.

Good for you! Your kids will love taking care of a living plant that will hopefully provide food too! I keep saying when we move back to Utah We will plant a garden, but I'm starting to think I should try to make it work here. I'll have to figure out what grows in this desert waste land.

I am happy you are staying! You are such a great teacher to your kids. I am sure it will be a great success maybe you could share a jar of salsa and we'll share our strawberry and raspberry jam. I always think this is the year I will dig up some grass for a garden and then every year I say na maybe next year. As soon as I can keep up with the flower beds I will hopefully get more excited about doing it. And your kids are gorgeous!

O what a relief! I love being in a decesion made mode. I am so happy because your house is looking so awesome that it would be a shame to just up and leave it now. I love the pics and Graces outfit most! How happy, I miss your sweet family already!
