Each night before finally retiring to bed I have to check on the kids one last time. If I forget, I always lie in bed and tell myself, "they're fine." But then something always says, "Oh yeah? What if there is something caught around their neck and they are slowly suffocating? Then how will you feel?" So I always get up. Sometimes Chancho says, groggily, "I already checked on them." But I still have to go because...well...maybe something got caught around their necks since he was there 5 minutes ago.
They are never suffocating. String Cheese and Deedle might need a blanket put on after having kicked it off or something, but usually they look comfortable and fine. With Loumy, you never know what you will find. He usually sneaks out of his bed after we put him down and plays, very surreptitously, in the dark until he passes out of exhaustion. He can fall asleep anywhere. I might have shared this photo before. This was taken two years ago and nothing has changed. One night Chancho couldn't find him anywhere in his room and then finally saw two feet sticking out from under the bed. He had to call me in to take a look before gently pulling him out and putting him in bed. It looked as if maybe he had crawled under there to find something and then didn't have the energy to get back out.
I took these photos in the last 2 weeks:

Today we set up his new bed with his "cool sewfa (aka surfer)" bedding. The kids each slept in their own rooms and so far they are all asleep with no complaints of being scared. I just checked on Loumy and he is actually lying how I left him. That is partly, I'm sure, because we let him stay up late to watch the original Star Wars, which he was been UBER excited about ever since Chancho told him they could watch it together on the new TV. So, he may have been too exhausted to move.
(Look at that cute, little, round Haitian ear, would you? Oh yeah, and its that time of year for me to braid his hair again. I love doing it like this until I get too tired of it.)
Maybe his new bed will help him want to stay in it more. Or maybe not. But I hope he outgrows this soon because he is pure muscle and very heavy (much heavier than Deedle, even though she is still quite a bit taller) and I don't know how much longer I'll be able to lift him back into a good sleeping position. Hopefully I'll be like that Mom in "Love You Forever" who, when her son is older, drives over to his house and puts a ladder up to his window, climbs in, then lifts him out of bed to rock and sing him their lullaby. I love that book and I always tear up at the end and the kids always look at me strangely, wondering why my voice has suddenly choked. I love it all except for this drawing because I'm like, "Pshh...yeah right...try lifting Loumy when he's a man...(and also, try climbing a ladder into your son's house in a dress and pumps)."
And now look what I have done. I found the book and scanned the drawing. Don't any of you say I never go the extra mile.

oh how i LOVE those pictures of loumy! i can't believe he can sleep half standing up! :) that's hilarious ... and i too love the book "i'll love you forever" and i just barely bought it for our house becauase i just can't read it - EVER without getting teary. cole just looks at me and asks me what's wrong. i think dad's going to have to read it to them now ...:)
great, great post and such great photos ... it's the little silly things (like how they sleep) that make me remember how much i love them, and love being a mom. :)
Loumy is truly a beautiful child...I'm sure I've said that before but he is really a beautiful boy...thos pictures are precious!
That kid is dang cute and I have been so thrilled to be here experiencing his super cool hair first hand and not only from pics. I was laughing so hard at the end of your post because you were saying how that book makes you cry and I was like, "Yah, I know, but don't you think that pic is a little silly??" and then you said how it was silly and even ADDED it in! Spectacular extra mile.
P.S. Have you ever noticed how very very tiny that sneaky little cat that is trying to escape out of the son's window is? Huh.
cute cute cute post awesome. he is so beautiful...and fun!
I loved that blog! I so can't relate with kids who can sleep anywhere. I don't have that kind of children, I used to envy mothers in relief society with sleeping 18 month olds on their laps. I would always think to myself "yeah right, my kid would never do that". Anyway, I think it's adorable that he does that. As far as that book goes, Nanny brought that home from school about two months ago and I totally teared up at the end too. That was after mocking the crazy, stalker mother of coarse!
I tear up at the end of that book too it has been one of our family favorites for years!!
That was such a great post. I have to do that too, I can't handle it if I haven't checked on them before I go to bed. Oh and when did he get so big, he looks huge on that bed!
Loumy is so adorable. Some day I need tips from you on cute hair like his. I love that book too. Both Pete and I have to check in on the kids too. It's just part of sleeping cozy at night. LOL I hope you are feeling well and enjoying your pregnancy. Great big hug~ Mare
Love the photos. What is it about our boys. arnoux is the exact same way. Sometimes he is missing. It now happens so regularily I d on't panic. He can be found anywhere under his bed, in someone else's room, or under my bed. It is also hard to find him when he is asleep and only wearing underwear. In the dark he blends well.
i absolutely loved this post, shan. thanks for sharing it with us. the pictures were fantastic. what a cool kid that loumy of yours is. i must say, though, that that book has always kind of creeped me out. what kind of mother sneaks across town late at night to break into her grown son's house and then tries to rock him? ha ha. who knows? maybe i will be.
Sweet posting Shanners. I too was always just a little creeped out by the old woman, the ladder and the big man child. I think I might freak if I woke up and saw Mary rocking Alan.
I cannot believe how big my little man is! So I noticed the little duck blanket. Joe's special blanket is a little duck blanket with bubbles. Almost the same pattern. He asks about loumy all the freakin time....So please get up here when I get home from Mexicana.
Also Some would say that little voice in your head making you go check again and again on things, is feeding any OCD tendency one might have. But in your case, I see why it's a must!
What a stinkin cutey you have!!!
The G has never been a mover in his sleep, but he's definitely heavy. If he falls asleep somewhere now, I find I can wake him up and get him to walk in a sleepy state and as soon as he's tucked in, he falls right back asleep.
I'm so glad you are back to blogging. I so look forward to reading your posts. Looks like you've been a busy girl. All of the kids' rooms look darling, how fun for all of them. Your tummy is so darn cute!! You look like you swallowed a half-deflated basketball. You look so awesome!! And I am so gonna be that momma who rocks her grown man-child on my lap! I can hardly bear the thoughts of them being bigger that me, and not being under my wing. Oooohh.... I'll just savor it for now. Glad to hear you are doing well. And Loumy is about the cutest thing in the world. Except for he is looking too old. THey all need to slow down a bit. :)
I love reading your posts. Loumy is such a cute guy. How fun to have a boy and soon to be one more.
