I have been blogging for about six months now and have been reflecting on why I do it. There are a lot of reasons. It has been fun to catch up with family and friends, as well as make some new friends. I am not a fantastic writer, but I do enjoy it. I like taking photos and using them to help chronicle events. I enjoy connecting to other blogs and laughing and crying with others. But when I start to feel overwhelmed with it all, I fall back on the main reason why I started a blog: it is an enjoyable way for me to keep a journal and I believe that keeping a journal is an important thing to do.
My father is a wonderful writer and has published more than a score of books, ranging from religiously doctrinal, to family humor, to a wonderful biographical account of a WWII Kamikaze Pilot. My mother is also a very good writer, and if not dedicated to publishing, she certainly is a great believer in record keeping. Both of my parents have instilled in me an importance of writing for expression and, more importantly, to keep a record. Journaling has been urged in my family for many reasons, not the least of which is because we have constantly been counseled by our church leaders to do so. I would like to share a couple of reason why I believe that journaling is important.
Wilford Woodruff, the fourth president of my church, felt very strongly that keeping a journal was something that everybody should do. One thing he said, which I thought was put very beautifully, in a meeting was: “While walking in a rapid stream we cannot tread twice in the same water. Neither can we spend twice the same time. When we pass out of that door, the work of this meeting will be closed to us forever. We shall never spend the time of this evening again. Then should we not keep a record of our work, teachings, and counsel which we give in this meeting? We should.” I like the analogy of our lives being like walking through a rapid stream and that we can never experience the same moment twice.
President Kimball, also reminded us that since Old Testament times, the Lord has always commanded us to be a record keeping people. He said, “Those who keep a personal journal are more likely to keep the Lord in remembrance in their daily lives”.
Another leader, Elder L. Edward Brown said, “There is something about journal writing that causes us to meditate, to recommit, and to receive spiritual impressions in the process of such pondering. Frequently, you will have cause to rejoice at how the Lord has been sensitively involved in guiding and watching over you and those you love and care about”.
I have found these things to be true since I began blogging. When I write about my family and the things we are going through, the blessings of my life are brought to light. I have found that I have more confidence in myself and I feel more peace. Of course, the majority of my blog posts are not spiritual in nature, simply the comings and goings of day-to-day life. But that is what a journal is.
Today I received my first Blog Book (aka my Journal) in the mail! I must tell you, I was much happier and more excited than I ever imagined I could be! I used blurb.com to do it. I was completely satisfied with the results and am so excited to think of having these books saved for my children to read in the future, as well as for me to reflect back on this period of my life. Many of you have asked about the book being finished and how it turned out. A couple of things that I would suggest:
1. Start your book ASAP. Although downloading the BookSmart program and importing your blog is very easy and is outlined step-by-step, it probably won't look just how you want it immediately. It takes a lot of time, so don't wait! You can keep adding to it.
2. Don't publish your book until you have at least 100 pages. The bigger your book, the more money you will save. What I mean is that three different 50-page books is MUCH more expensive than one 150-page book.
3. Take advantage of printing your photos in the book. There is no price difference between a full-page photo and a b&w typed page. I added some extra photos to my book (you can import any photos you want) and had a fun time using different lay outs to go with each post.
Well, that is all I can think of for now. Let me know if you have questions. I'm sure there is even a lot more cool stuff that you can do to your book than what I did. You can probably import your own backgrounds. I don't know. But they have a lot to choose from and I had a fun time choosing the right background for each post. So, get to it! And if you have already published a blog book and have found some place that you like better than blurb, please let me know! And sorry these photos are blurry but at least they give you an idea of some of the things you can do:

i love my perla!! hope u r over any bumps!!!
I want to slurp my blog too
i love the book! :) i'm so excited to do it too ... and i feel the same way about blogging. it's just a nice way to journal - and i always think of pres. eyring talking about his journaling and how it's blessed his life and made him more aware of Heavenly Father's hand in our lives. it's all so true! :) thanks for your journaling quotes, and mostly thanks for being so inspiring - in so many ways! :)
Very well said, Perla. And what a fantastic, fun way to reward your efforts and preserve your stories!
May I add another 'hoo-ah' for blurb.com?
Two years ago, our children did a book for us for our anniversary using blurb.com. It was our family from the year we married to that present time. Each two-page spread represents one year of our marriage and has lots of family photos (which would have been easier for my kids if whoever is in charge of photo-organization was doing a better job!) plus a list of happenings for that year...some major world news events and some minutiae.
It is a treasured keepsake. Last year, I ordered copies of that book for each of my kids for Christmas. (blurb.com archives stuff for you)
I really, really like your idea of printing your blog. A whole new realm of possibilites has been opened for me! There is some amazing technology available for us, isn't there!
I wanted to just jump up and down when I read this post. You are so cool. I loved all your thoughts and quotes and then to end it with your success made it a top notch post! I am excited to blurb - always wondered about it but now you've got me sold.
Questions: did you put every post in the book or did you just put your favorties....
Thanks for sharing! I have been playing with Blurb for a while now, but stopped because I realized how time consuming it was going to be. I love how your book turned out. I will have to get back to that project.
I love the idea that I can have my blog in a book form. What a wonderful thing.
I too was thinking about why I blog, and then remembered that it's my journal of sorts. Nothing special, really, just the day-to-days of our world. Love it. Many hugs and thank yous!:O)
Oh my gosh, that is so cool only I am so intimidated about doing it, but so excited. I don't quite trust cyberspace and I still like the old fashioned book right in front of me. I am so excited we can do that with our blogs!! I can't wait to check yours out and then can we please plan a special "tutoring saturday' where you get me completely confident and going on mine?? Really. You know new things scare me and I really want one!! Only yours looks so good it seems impossible!!
This blurb.com you speak of is a new thing to me. However, I cannot wait to check it out - it seems like just the type of thing I'd like.
Thanks again for sharing!
Yay!! I didn't even realize that you could make a book out of your blog. What an awesome idea....now THERE is a reason to blog. I try to scrapbook but it's so time consuming. Your book looks amazing. I'm definatley going to try it. Thanks for the good info!
Nice! I'm way excited to get started on my book. I like how the exterior of your book looks as well. How fun, I can't wait to see how mine turns out!
Your backgrounds look darling too.
I also love the blurb.com. We used it to make a book for my parents for their anniversary. It had pictures from every year of their marriage, plus the highlights of the world's events from that same year. It was pretty fun to put together.
AND....I just read down and saw that my mom posted about the same book in her comments.
I'll just go now. :)
DiaHello'
I enjoy reading your blog and i think it's admirable that you've kept it up for a year now..that is very commendable!
I just began, but i am a writer and used to doing a lot of writing..so we will see. Since you like journaling, i thought you might be interested in my book, Regina's Closet: Finding My Grandmother's Secret Journal.
Also, come visit my blog www.dianaraab.blogspot.com
i'm glad you all want to do the book thing.
maggie and lori, what a cool idea to do for an anniversary! i will have to think of other ways i might want to use this site...
tia, i didn't use every post, but most of them. some of my posts are only a video or something, so that doesn't transfer so well to book form :)
This is so cool! I went to the site and started my book. I recommend doing it right away because it is not as overwhelming. By starting it you get an idea of how to make better posts. I just used their default setting instead of manually putting my posts in. You can still change them after that. SO neat!
Great, great!! Right after I get off your site I'm checking out blurb!
BTW, tramps are not my friend. My Aly broke both bones in her left forearm. Bad tramp!
That is such a fantastic idea. Thanks so much for the knowledge. I thought about this but didn't know how to go about doing it. I will for sure now!
Oh how FUN! I cannot wait to send for one. How do you know you have 100 pages?
I especially liked the quote by Pres. Kimbal. the book looks awesome. I've been trying to compile my own, but only in black and white. Thanks for the blurb suggestion.
I love the quote from the 4th president of your church! And I am so diggin' your blurb book. I tried to do it once, but felt too overwhelmed. Now I will try again :) Thanks for the inspiration.
Love ya!
O my heck you weren't kidding about the book turning out so cute! I am so excited to get working on mine!!!
