When I was young, the Poll family had a trampoline. They lived through the backyard and down the street. It was rectangular and the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. When I was invited over, I would look out the window longingly and finally would get up my nerve to ask if I could jump on it. If I was invited specifically to jump, all the better. Trampolines were not so common 25 years ago. In fact, I think that was the only trampoline in the neighborhood. I could jump on that thing for hours. I loved it and wanted my own trampoline so badly! I loved it in the summer when we'd put on our swimsuits and put a sprinkler on under the mat.
Of course I also loved it when I decided to jump off the deck onto the trampoline and when my feet hit, my knees slammed into my chest, causing large cracking sounds and an impossibility of breathing for several minutes. I also loved it when I sprained my right ankle so badly that I have forevermore walked with a cracking sound (yeah, Kelly, that's where it came from. You better leave a comment). This trampoline never broke down or had problems. And, here is the amazing part. Now the trampoline was moved from the Polls house to their grandma's (who lives right next to my parents) and my OWN children jump on that very same trampoline every chance they get!
With this experience in mind, I bought my first trampoline for my children. I bought it from somebody on Craig's List. I picked it up in the dark and paid $75 for it. Not bad, I thought. Turns out that this trampoline, although only a couple of years old, was the king of suck. It had these fabric type springs that I'd never heard of. No worry, I told myself, trampolines last hundreds of years. I guess not. My kids enjoyed it enough (as you have witnessed from past posts) but, a couple of months ago one of the springs ripped off. Within 24 hours, 10 more had broken off and the trampoline was deemed a safety hazard (not the kind where you crack your ribs or your ankles, rather the kind that look like they are condemned). The kids were so sad as I tore the tramp apart and took it off to the dump (although the trip to the dump with Chancho was a joy for them, naturally).
Here are a couple of photos of my little superheroes enjoying their trampoline during its brief time with us.Since that time I have realized how naive I was regarding trampolines. Obviously Charlie Poll had some sort of magical powers infused into his trampoline because it stands today. Yet I am finding out that many of these things fall apart in just a couple of years. What the heck?
Chancho was fine with us not having a trampoline. He doesn't like how it looks in the yard and he says it is hard to move around when we have to mow the lawn but by we, we mean "me" and I don't mind moving it when I mow the lawn. The kids have been spending far less time outdoors because they have no trampoline to play Nickelodeon Cruise Ship on. Oh, and also our swingset with the cool fort and slide and stuff is basically broken to pieces now, too, in only 3 years. I haven't completely condemned it yet, but its getting close. So, anywho, I broke down and bought a new trampoline and I am please blessing (Jamie) that it will live as long as my kids want to jump on it. Chancho help me set it up when he got home from work and it was dark by the time we finished, but of course the kids needed to try out all of their new Olympic moves on it.
Speaking of Olympics, aren't they cool? Loumy got a cute little medal in church on Sunday that says, "I can say I'm sorry." I told him how cool that was and how I was proud of him because he is very good at apologizing. I told him it looks like an Olympic gold medal. He suddenly got a gleam in his eye. He wore it the rest of the day, but he stopped telling people he got it at church and started telling them he got it at the, "Olymps-SIX". Watch for the "Haitian Sensation" in 2020!
Thanks to those of you worried about my mental health. Sorry for scaring you. I am actually fine. Just a couple of lame days, you know. But it's fine now. Thanks for your concern!

Tramps! We have one! Aside from shopping at Aldis it was the one thing that I really wanted for my kids - the thing I could get and know that I had arrived .... to real jobdome. Tramps rock!
Now I can't jump on them mind you...4 kids later the bladder is not what it used to be. However it is so fun to watch the kids enjoying themselves and making up all kinds of clever games. The games - real imagination comes forth on the bed of a tramp.
I can't believe you lived by the Polls. I was bff with Crystal for forever. she lives in my mom's ward so I see her every so often and my mom always tells me when she sings in church and that makes me and my heart smile cuz she sings so pretty. Love them Polls - and their tramp!
I remember trampoline days. What fun. Sorry your first one was a dud. Loumy is so cute. I love the gold medal!:O)
I think all "old" stuff was made better. You know, old toasters and mixers and apparently trampolines. They were heavy duty serious business. Mike's parents still have the rectangle tramp from when Mike was little.
BUT, now, those costumes of your girls!! That is another matter!! I'd nearly forgotten altogether! Maybe you should let my girls use them this year!
P.S. Are you really fine? Or are you just trying to calm your blogging readers?
i'm with nancy, i really think the "old" stuff is so much better - like my mom has this old cash register we as kids all played with that is still around today for all the grandkids - and much more fun than any i can seem to find ... hmm ... tramps. i really want to get one for my kids but i hear such scary stories ... maybe i'll have to break down and just do it! :) or steal a really old one that will last forever! :) jk... i don't even know anyone around here with an old one to take. :) and like i'd do that anyway! :)
very great pictures. i love the costumes! oh how i wish cole could come and play in his batman costume! he'd think he was in heaven!! :) fun fun fun
(and i'm SO glad you're "please blessing" :) )
Holy Cow, I was just saying yesterday that they don't make trampolines the way they used to. We bought ours 15 months ago and it has already fallen apart, yet my sisters 15 year old tramp is still great! I'm thinking of selling mine for cheap just to get rid of the piece of ----. I mean crap, not that other word! I love Loumy's medal. He was cracking me up on the way to tumbling yesterday with his infectious laugh. I seriously love that laugh, I wish I could bottle it! I think Haitian Sensation is gonna stick now!
Oh my goodness! Those costumes are killin me! Too cute!
His smile just melts my heart...I've said it before in previous posts but I'll say it again....you are going to have your hands full with all th girls knocking down your door to speak to your little man!
My parents' neighbors had the brilliant foresight to put their tramp on a concrete pad....
I don't think the broken arm my sister got when she fell off that bad boy was EXACTLY a compound fracture, but it was all but poking out of her skin.
Ahh... Tramps!
Did you KNOW Trampoline is an Olympic sport. I had no freakin' clue!
I was thinking that trampolines were not as fun and bouncy as they used to be but then it dawned on me that I am also 120 pounds heavier than when they were "fun". Maybe that is why my springs are tearing out?!
Can I please be Wonder Woman w/Deedle? That's all I ever wanted when I was her age. That really took me back!
man that trampoline IS old! I didn't know it belonged to the Polls 1st! I love that you LOVED when you got the wind knocked out of you when you jumped off the deck and then again when you sprained your ankle!
Now your playground is falling apart too!? Dang!
Those superhero costumes are the best! Please teach me to sew so that my kids may wear cool costumes for Halloween.
I'm glad you're feeling better.
Yihee! I am now all excited for Halloween! I want to get the kids a tramp so bad only Josh hasn't been broken yet. Mostly I want it for me...I got some new sub zero resist sleeping bags and want to sleep out a tramp so badly!!!! ahhhh sigh...Maybe you and Jami should be doing some "please blessing" for me so I can get one.....
We just got a tramp too. Some guy gave it to Brandon and it is one of those good old ones. It is so bouncy and going strong. Hopefully your tramp lasts a long time and your kids have wonderful memories.
(hopefully not the rib cracking or ankle spraining ones!)
This post reminds me of what I always say, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander."
Love,
Your Stake Camp Secret Sister
stake camp secret sister? who are you? i haven't had one of those in so long! :) is it you, rochelle? chareyl? kirsten? come on...fess up! i assume you read my sweet comment on nancy's blog so you must know her too...hm...
pooka, you are so petite, i can probably fit you into deedle's wonder woman costume. or i can make one for you!
I love your blog. I do not keep up as well as I would like to but you do an amazing job. I love hearing about the family.
Why won't you post the coolest Superhero pictures on earth (of our superhero days)? Those costumes are amazing (you've perfected the vinyl I see) I do hope that Deedle grows up to be just like me, Wonder Woman of course, she was so cool in her invisible jet.
In reference to your ankle, I am sorry to mock your snapping ankle, it is so nice to hear you sneaking up on me. Patti and I feel your ankle pain too! Thanks to Zhateal's house I have scars to prove it--really it wasn't your fault...or was it? Hmmm....
Well what is the reason for my snapping ankle then!??
P.S. Your SS was in a tragic accident and is therefore unable to respond :(
