Growing Up

Most of the time, it seems like our kids grow up quite gradually. Other times, I am left almost speechless.

Here is a cute picture of Deedle and Loumy starting preschool this year. Notice how Loumy insists on wearing his backpack "Diego " style? It wasn't much of a shock to my system because they both attended preschool together last year, as well. Other things have been quite a bit more shocking. As we sat at the dinner table and listened to String Cheese tell us about her assembly at school, what she had for lunch, the new method she is learning to use for math, her friends, etc. etc., Chancho and I both had the same overwhelming feeling hit us at the same time--this girl had suddenly grown up with out us noticing (or consenting)!

Then there is Deedle and her new fascination with sewing. We were over at my Mom's house the other day and she was helping the little ones make bean bags. I thought, "my kids are too little to try any type of sewing. They will just puncture their fingers and cry." But, no, they did great. And when we came home, Deedle wanted more. I wrote her name and the year on a little piece of fabric with a pencil and she embroidered it. And she loved it! This video might look boring but it was really fascinating for me to just sit and watch her. I kept thinking, "What is my baby doing with a needle and thread? How can she do that?" It makes me wonder how many other "big kid" things my little ones are probably perfectly capable of doing. I don't know that I am eager to find out. One can only take so much change at once!

Very nice post. We have proclaimed no more birthdays at our house! (For many reasons - mainly my mental health given the past weeks.) But just wait until they drive. Yikes - I've ages 20 years in 2 months.

Oh, and I've been missing you on the blog - what have you been doing - watching your kids grow ....like staring at them like 24/7 much like one would watch grass grow? Yeah, talk about deserted blogs! And deserted Cyberfriends!!!

PS - we'll just see what Joe things about those questions... he may take one look and say "No way - not doing any of this!!!" I will be laughing on the floor when he answers the one about my friends.

I think I notice it most when I make Goldie do things because her older brother and sister are -- like fold her laundry, empty the dishwasher, etc. I never would have even thought of trying to have Abe or Daisy do those things then because I thought they were too little. You always hear stories of people like Spencer W. Kimball whose job it was to milk the cow every morning at age 5 and then you realize, yah, our kids could probably do a lot of stuff if we wnated them to . . . it is nice to have them still be babies though (except of course when you have other babies and then it is nice to have them be a little more grown up).

what a great idea. Yes someone needs to teach them the lost arts.

i had the same realization too and while i'm happy for the things cole can do now and the way he gets so excited about the world around him, i just want to push "pause" on the life button and keep my boys little forever. :) (ok. i say that now but in a few minutes when there's a temper-tantrum or some other drama i will probably want to push "fast forward" instead! :) ) ... thanks for the post. you say it all so well! :)

It's scary how fast they grow up. I never thought I'd see the day when all my kids were toilet trained. Now they are and two are in school. I feel old.:) Your kids are such cuties.

I totally agree...time just goes way to fast! Mine started 1st grade and 4th grade this year and as they leave my office each morning to go to class I still can't help but think.."How did they get so old?" Love the video and I love hearing your voice! :)

I do love Preschool. Isn't it wonderful!! It is sad how fast they grow and what they can do. I cant even embroider nor can I spell it. Maybe she can teach me some day.

They are growing up. This stage in life is going way too fast. Shouldn't parents get a say in all this?
