Some of you have asked about this Haiti education deal that I am involved with. Many of you already know about it. But, too bad. I am going to Haiti in 5 weeks, so I've kind of been going crazy excited to see all my kids again! And I've been listening to Cold Play today a lot and for some reason all of their music makes me totally think of Haiti and causes me to dream all kinds of things and sometimes makes me cry about Haiti. I don't know why Cold Play does that. It has just somehow become my Haiti music.
Anyway, I will try to keep this version very abbreviated.
Haitian Roots was originally inspired by him:When we brought Loumy home, we felt very bad about all of the other children left suffering in Haiti. Chancho said it would be cool if one day we were able to start some kind of foundation or something to help provide educational opportunities for some of the children. I said, "Sure, that would be awesome to do...some day...when our kids are older...and I am healthy...and we have a lot of money." God said, "Nope. Do it now."
So, we talked to some of our best friends, Isson and Marie France. They are from Haiti and have a great passion for their country, having only left because they were forced to for safety reasons (super cool story that maybe I can tell some day). With the four of us, we decided to give it a try. We worked with some of Isson and MF's family members in Haiti and got things arranged and set a goal to sponsor 20 kids for school. It costs around $250 for a child to attend school in Haiti. But the average Haitian family lives on only $300/year. So, as you can imagine, school is not an option for a huge number of children. We were blessed and amazed to find that there are lots and lots of people that also want to do good things but aren't sure the avenue they want to use. We were quickly able to raise the money for 23 kids to go to school. This is our very first group of children:
Our next year we sponsored 56 children and our third year we were up to 115. We are starting our fourth year and things are going great. We still have 115 kids and our next goal is to start our own school.
I love Haiti and the kids there so much. I love that so many other people feel the same way and feel inspired to want to become involved. We have a lot of really cool people now participating on the Haitian Roots team and lots of others who are pretty staunch supporters. I am able to lean on them when I get worried about how we will meet our next goal, and they lean on me, too. Here are some other reason my dream stays alive:
Me and Joveline.
Some kids at a group home for rescued slave children in Haiti. Don't they look happy? Look close and you will see bruises, knocks, scars, and burn marks all over their bodies.Christella, Francesca, Sariah, and Sarah. Could they be any more beautiful?
"My boys!" Max and Jacky. I love them!
Orphanage full of thirsty kids. It is HOT in Haiti!
It is truly a miracle and a blessing to be able to have these children in my life. Feeling like, "Hm, I really should make a donation!" ? Just click here!

You are such an amazing inspiration. Those children are so beautiful. What a wonderful thing you are doing. Keep up the good work. I wish I could help.
You inspire me Perla and I am so glad I followed a link from Tash's blog way back when! The things that you do and the chances that you are giving these children astounds me. God bless you.
What the . . . why didn't I have any idea you guys were doing a Haiti trip in 5 weeks?!! We even hang out now!! Who is all going?Wwhat is your agenda this trip? I guess you can tell me in person, but sheesh, it looks like we still have to read each other's blogs to know what is going on even though we are like . . . almost like sisters!! Maybe you are my sister from another mister. I don't know, it seems like somethin' for sure.
wow. i love learning more about haitian roots and am amazed at what you've started and all you are doing. i'm sure those you love there love you just as much. :) have a safe trip.
WHAAA? You are going to Haiti? I am so happy for you! I am so worried for you! But I am so happy for you! Because I know this is your truest love outside your family - it is a part of your family! Oh my, there is so much to be done! Why are you blogging?
Congratulations! I think those kids shine - despite the health and circumstance that we desire for them - they have special gifts and you can see that in their eyes. Truly inspirational - them and YOU!
Perla, you are amazing. What else can I say.
For only having "met" you a short time ago by way of blog-hopping, I realize that it is not possible for me to think any higher of you than I already do. You are such a wonderful inspiration. Thank you for sharing, both this fantastic cause but also a way for us to become involved.
I pray you have safety and success on your journey.
Wow Perla, You just made me cry. Tears of happiness, of course, that you are doing so much to make a BIG difference in the lives of others. I shouldn't expect anything less from you. It seems like yesterday you were bringing Loumy home (after months and months of effort) and we got to meet his beautiful face. Now he is growing up so fast. You have been through so much, and yet your attitude remains truly inspirational. Thank you for your example to me. Keep up the good work! Isn't it nice to see the fruits of your labors. You are amazing!
You are going in 5 weeks? Maybe you could go there and shake some sense in Marie to get my file moving again! Or just sneak Zachary home with you!
For those of us who think it probably can't be done, or I could never do that, you prove it can and I could! Thanks for the "wow" moment.
Sounds wicked awesome, how does one get in on this stuff? Oh wait I already am, lucky me! Five weeks! i can't wait! It seems like Haiti is my link to you (among all the other wonderful things) and I am so happy I get to be there with you! heather
