More Things I Like

Here are a few more things that I am loving about our new home:

1. When I asked about what kind of pests we might be dealing with in this neighborhood (of course my biggest dread, having had experience in Texas, was las CUCARACHAS). But no, luckily none of those to speak of, at least in this house or most neighboring homes. Not many pests at all except....the DREADED...BUNNY! Yes, this is a newer-ish neighborhood and these fields used to be full of bunnies, and by darnit, some are still around! In fact, there is a rumor that some live under our shed in the backyard. Ick! haha. Just kidding. I saw a bunny on a neighbors' lawn the other day and it made me smile and say, "Ahh! Look kids!" And they all cheered happily. I suppose that if we were trying to grow a garden (which we may some time) and Peter Cottontail kept eating our veggies, we might get irritated. But for now, I think they make fantastic pests!

2. This logo speaks for itself. Normally I am a chocolate girl, but my favorite flavor so far since I've been back in TX is Pistachio Almond. Mmm. Maybe I will go buy some today.3. On a more serious note: United Nations neighborhood. No joke. I have never seen anything like this. It is awesome! This area where we are living is a nice, affordable housing (not low-income-housing), working-class, neighborhood. Maybe more blue than white collar.
As for the kids I've met, most of them are coming from Two-parent, hard-working, moral-teaching homes. Loumy's class is only about 1/3 white. As I picked up the kids from school yesterday I recognized people from so many different nationalities, I just beamed. There are several families from Ethiopia (one just across the street, the mother is named Ahlmaz, sp? and the daughter is in Deedle's class). Some are Muslim and keep their heads covered. There are families from other African nations, who have immigrated here. I met or recognized families from Mexico who speak only Spanish (and I was excited on the first day of school to volunteer to help with translating since they only have one or two employees at the school who speak Spanish). This wasn't surprising to me. We're in a state that borders Mexico. But I have also met or seen children from India, Pakistan and other Middle-Eastern Countries, Korea, Vietnam, other Asian countries, African-Americans, and I'm sure other races/nationalities. I think it is a huge blessing for all of my children. When they describe a new friend to me at school, they usually tell me the color of their hair and the color of their skin, but they don't know anything about black or white or hispanic yet. They just know that we're all different but mostly they're finding that we're not.

Here's a photo of SC and Loumy with some of the neighborhood kids.

I am glad you made it to Texas safely and that you already have so many friends and family members close by to help make the move easier. If you ever feel like you need more friends my sister in law Dani Lillywhite lives in the area and she is great. Her kids are boy 9, girl 6, and girl 3. She has met a lot of incredible people that have become very close friends just through her ward. I am sure you'll do the same. She hasn't had any run ins with bunnies, but she has had her share of snakes including water moccasins. Lucky for you so far it has only been bunnies.
