This story was much better when I wrote it 15 years ago. I was hanging out in my parents living room with my sisters and a brother when suddenly the idea came to me. I said, "Hold on a minute. I have to go write a story." In five minutes I returned with this small, horrifying masterpiece. It is not so original now. My idea of combining scary stories together to form one beautiful, little, horror narrative was stolen by Hollywood and made into a major motion picture. Also, you would probably have to be familiar with these particular scary stories that my sisters and I found TERRIBLY frightening as children to be able to enjoy it. With no further ado, here is A Very Scary Story:
One time this friend of my sister's was driving home. It was late and really rainy. Suddenly it seemed like she was being followed. A car was right on her tail. It started honking its horn and flashing its lights. She whipped her head around and they stopped. She didn't know what to do. The flashing and honking continued whenever she was looking forward. When she turned to look back, they stopped. Just then her car phone rang.
"Hello?"
A raspy voice said, "Go check the children."
"What children?" she cried.
*click*
Three times the phone rang and each time the individual on the other end would only say, "Go check the children." And before she could ask, "Who are you? What are you talking about?" they would simply hang up.
Finally she called the operator to ask him to trace the mysterious call.
After a moment, the operator came back on the line and in a nervous hush cried, "It's coming from inside your car. Get out as fast as you can!"
She jammed on the breaks and as she was about to get out she saw a strange sweater that she hadn't noticed before. She grabbed it for evidence and ran for her life. She ran and ran until she got to the police station. When she arrived she was so out of breath that she could not speak.
The sheriff, eying the sweater asked, "Where did you get that? That's my mother's sweater!"
She was finally able to gasp, "Then it was your Mom! You've got to arrest her!"
"But," the sheriff raised his eyebrows, "my mother has been dead for five years."

Oh my gosh, i am laughing so so hard!! i have been waiting for this! I expected that perhaps I only remembered it as so funny because it was associated with goofy late night drunkenness, but no, it was still just as great, possibly even better than I remembered it, how smoothly you tied them all together!! Oh I love love it!! I am going to read it to Mike now and I will be so sad if he doesn't know each one of those scary stories to get why it is so freakin' awesome!!! Also it makes me happy because it reminds me of just being at Polk's end late at night sitting around the table with the red curtains drawn, reading and laughing at things like that, or Chris's story. Once I remember we kept just taking turns saying a word like "Eureka" then we each had like 5 mins to write a quick story to read. Ohhh thanks, that was great.
oh yeah...i forgot about all those cool word games that only kids of an English professor would want to invent to play...like poetry games where we would give you a theme and it had to be a certain amount of lines and you only had two minutes to write it or something like that. those were some fun times. I'm glad that the story wasn't a disappointment after all of these years. Hope Mike likes it.
YES!! This is the best night ever. I just read it with Mike and he got it!! I am almost crying. We especially love that the cop would recognize that sweater as his mom's and no one elses.
another funny thing is that we thought it was SO hilarious to think of phone calls coming into you while driving a car (although I'd seen a "car phone" on TV) and the thought of somebody actually able to call you from within your car was SO ABSURD that it made our bellies ache. Nowadays all I hear is, "quit talking on your cell phone in the car...you're going to get in a wreck..you're going to get cancer...etc."
HA HA HA - very good - except I don't know the sweater story...who knew you did such funny things as a child...
So a long time ago I saw an interview with David Duchovny where he mentioned that the X-files theme song actually has lyrics written by Mark Snow (the composer). Then he sang them for the audience in TVland. They were pretty gripping. They went like this:
The X-Files is a show
With music by Mark Snow
The X-Files is a show
With music by Mark Snow
Now, whenever I hear this song, I sing those lyrics in my head. I can't make it stop. It made me want to inflict it on you.
:)
L
Thanks Lori! I am glad to know those lyrics. That is funny. And, by the way, my sisters should know who you are--sisters and friends, this is Lori and she is super cool and funny and now works just desks away from Chancho and she is adopting from Haiti and has been through hell and is still going through it...so...check out her blog and say some prayers for her, too!
SPOOKY that you were so twisted back then and continue to be...just kidding(taking a page from Pris's book)
This story is the best, I don't think you could have had any idea how perfect it was when you wrote it :) Hollywood, don't make me laugh!
I almost peed my pants that was so scary, because (1 I was wondering if your sister's friend was ME and (2 I was listening to that horrifying X-Files music in the background while reading. Damn that Hollywood for stealing your brilliant idea!
