One thing about getting married quickly is that you have to learn a lot about your spouse after the fact. In our case, I have always been fine with it. But it is interesting. For example, one day a couple of years into our marriage we were talking and had this conversation:
Chancho: I hate horses.
Me: WHAT?! What are you talking about?
C: I just don't like them.
Me: Well, I have always wanted to have my own horse so this isn't right. And besides, you can't hate horses.
C: Yes, I can. I do.
Me: But you are a TEXAN. It is absolutely unacceptable for you to hate horses. Have you ever even been on a horse?
C: No. But one tried to bite me once.
Me: ::pshaw::
We started doing some of his family history and as we learned about his heritage I would occasionally think, "Cowboy-ing is in his blood. He doesn't hate horses!" But he still said he did.
I found this photo at his parent's house, copied it and framed it. "Look at you, you are a Texas cowboy!"
"Nope," he'd say. From the time I knew him he was more of a hip snowboarder than a cowboy, so I mostly let it rest. Besides, I've never been big on modern cowboys myself. Never been a fan of country music in any form. And, supposedly, neither had Chancho (although I recently learned that he took a date to a Tim McGraw concert before we met).
Awhile ago we saw part of Comanche Moon on TV and I was shocked to find out he'd never seen Lonesome Dove. We watched it and now own it. Seeing those cowboys in Texas, I think, made him think more about what his great and great great grandparents might have been like. At least that is what it made me think about and I didn't ask him what he thought.
Around this same time Megan and Josh bought two horses. Chancho said he wasn't interested in riding them and I didn't push the issue but thought he would probably give it a try if the opportunity arose. I hoped that the bitter memory of a horse bite from childhood could be assuaged by a more positive experience. When we visited Meg, Chancho got on Gus right away and looked, to me, like quite a natural. Meg and Josh were surprised it was his first time. Chancho enjoyed it a lot and when we came home he started learning more about horses and is now very interested in learning how to ride better and hopefully owning some of our own someday.I was pleased with his open heart. But little did I know what would happen next. We were driving along and he was changing through the stations and stopped on country.
Me: What are you doing?
C: I like this song.
Me: What do you mean?
C: I'm kind of starting to like country. On my commute home from work sometimes I get tired of sports talk radio and other music stresses me out so I've been listening to country and I like it. It relaxes me. It's not all full of angst.
Me: ::pshaw::
And just a few weeks ago while getting dressed in the morning, Chancho suddenly says to me:
"I think I'm just going to give in to my inner redneck."
Me: What does that mean?
C: I don't know, I just like it. It suits me.
Me: Do you have to be a 'redneck'? Can't you give in to your inner 'Texan'?
C: ::shrug:: I guess.
We got in his jeep to go to dinner as a family the other night and he turns on Tim McGraw--a new 3 CD set that he bought. He turns on something like this song (you will have to turn off the player at the top if you are interested in hearing this and then click 'play'):
On one of the CDs I found this song and thought I could do okay with it. It is actually Nelly featuring Tim McGraw and I like this song. Its not exactly typical country (haha) but I'm trying, too, to open up a bit:
So, that is what is happening right now. Chancho is going back to his roots. And I kid you not that just this very moment while writing this post he called to me from the TV room and said, "You should come watch this show with me. It's pretty funny." So, I went in to check it out and it is something like the "50 Best Redneck Moments" on CMT!

Uck, I am not much of a country music fan either except the songs that do not sound country. My husband grew up with it, but doesn't make me listen to it much. I cannot believe how much Deedle looks like Chancho though, wow!
Oh I loved loved this post, and I especially loved all your "pshaws" and "look at you your a texas cowboy." And, I like country music fine these days. It's mostly not even country anymore . . . kind of rock n roll with a tiny bit of "Oooh, 'I'm a Texan -- kind of'"
Also, it reminded me of Mike telling me he hates fireworks . . . and me being like you, "What??!! How could this be? Ive never known this, you can't hate fireworks." But then we had to go live in a "every firework is legal neighborhood" where one neighbor literally almost killed the entire street when his 5,000 in fireworks accidentally all blew up at once (oops) and every other neighbor sent them off for two weeks straight day and night . .. and now he will never be right about fireworks . . .
I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble here but I have always assumed that Chancho was a cowboy! And I didn't even know he was from Texas, or his "people" were. He just always sort of looked like the cowboy sort and given the "Roy" address, that sort of summed it up for me unconsciously. Anywho - this whole post was very fun to read and learn a little more about big C. I think for Christmas he should get you one of those t-shirts that say "I mess with Texas!"
Oh no Perla, this is kind of a disturbing tend. I mean,we also have relatives that were slaveholders. Is he going to decide to buy someone next? It sounds to me like its been a bit too long since Cancho went snowboarding. Tsk tsk tsk, we might have to nip this one in the bud.
i think it's all quite hilarious this progression from nothing (i hate horses) to listening to country and thinking of having horses ... and i will admit, once you start listening to a little tim you will find other songs that aren't so "country" -- because i'm not a country music fan and jas isn't either, but still ... just watch out! once you let it in there's no going back!!!
ps-and if you do get a horse then i'm for SURE coming to visit :) ... that's the only reason meg and i are still friends, so i can ride her horse some day!! hehehe jk
Hah! This makes me so so happy! I am tellin ya, keep your horses with us until you get the right place you want. I have to laugh at how happy the old western and country feel makes me too. I hope you are planning another trip up so he can take off into the wilderness with Josh on the horses than you will probably be buying a horse when you get home!
Also sweet that Nancy, you and myself will be having these magnificant animals around.
Josh usually feeds them but is out of town. I haven't been riding in a few weeks and suddenly just being near Augustus and clara woke me up inside. I just spent an hour out with them grooming them. People don't lie when they call it horse therapy.
Yeah me you and Nac can start barrel racing together like these cool older women were at our local rodeo!
JAMI!!!!! O you owe me for that one!
I am jealous - we have just the opposite problem at our house! I have been trying to get Lori into horses for the past year!
Good luck!
Brent
How funny. We have a similiar issue at our house. My mother-in-law couldn't be more of a cowgirl. The horses, farm, horse arenas, boots, etc. Her husband even rides for the sherrif's mounted posse. However, Brandon has absolutely NO desire to even get near horses. And don't even mention cowboy boots. It certainly isn't passed through the DNA! All of this I'm okay with. I'm not much of a country gal myself.
That is really funny! I guess it goes to show that you don't know if you love something or not until you really try it! And BTW my mom absolutely loves horses and my dad hates them because he got bit once:)I will be looking to see if he wears wranglers to church!
pERLISIMA! iT HAS BEEN TOO LONG SINCE i HAVE BLOGGED! i LOVED READING ABOUT cHANCHO'S NEW-FOUND LOVE OF HORSES AND EMBRACING THE COWBOY WITHIN! Ohhh. sorry that was all capitalized...that dang caps lock key gets me every time!
Anyway, I loved reading about Deedle's hard week and think the starting out with two dollars is a great idea. I may have to try it.
I loved reading about when you met Chancho and how when you knew you loved him it wasn't even a question anymore. I love you guys and I am so happy for your awesome little family. I thought the autumn pictures were so fun and beautiful of your kids playing in the leaves. And your cute little picture of all the girly things purchased said so much. I am really happy for this little dud e that will come to see us soon:)
All great posts Perla...very nice journaling on your part. I, on the other hand, have been quite the slacker.
What a great post. The funny thing is, is Nic and I grew up loving country music. Always listened to it, Nic had horses and the whole bit. When I met him I was loving it because he liked country music (unlike another guy I had been dating who just couldn't bring himself to like it) and that was a deal-breaker for me at the time. After we got married we just stopped listening. We seriously have been through about 7 years of country-free listening. But in the last couple months Nic has turned full circle again and is listening to nothing but country music, watching CMT all the time, and hunting up a storm. What the heck!! Who is this person, and what have you done with my husband!! Chanch and Nic need to hang out it sounds like. Great story. Maybe you are gonna get those horses you always wanted. Unexpectedly??
p.s. I LOVE that Nelly feat. Tim McGraw song. I had forgotten about it actually. I might need to add that to my playlist. Thanks!
