Some of you have said that Mckinley sounds like a girl name. I don't agree, obviously, or I wouldn't have chosen it for one of my favorite boy names. But because some have said this I have been doing a lot of research on the name and can't find any girls with that name. I think because girls have taken over Mackenzie and Mackenna and a few of the other Mc names that some people now think maybe it is girly. To me, Mckinley sounds like a dignified southern gentleman who could be a cool, rough and tumble kid with the nickname of Mac.
So, here is my question. I am not asking if you like the name or not, I am just asking if you honestly know of a little girl named Mckinley. I wouldn't want my son teased if there were several little girls at his school with the name. But I have searched social security records and done web searches and even google image searches and haven't found a single girl named Mckinley.
Please be honest and tell me if you personally know a girl with that name.
Thank you and thank you for the voting. Chancho and I are appreciative. Hopefully we don't end up choosing the name that you all like the least, but that may just happen and ya'll can live with it. :)

sheesh. never mind. chancho is now doing his own research and is better at it. although mckinley has traditionally always been a boy name, though not very popular, in the last year or so there have been some baby girls named mckinley. that makes me mad.

Culligula has a niece named mcKinley. She sometimes goes by Mak.
Honestly..... Grace has a friend name Mc Kinnley and Elle has a friend named Kinnley (both girls). With that said, I don't know if that should totally be a factor in your choice. After we had Tate we had somebody that said they knew a girl with his name, I do not think any boy name these days is safe from being used on a girl. Taylor, Ryan, Ashton, Stevie ect..... I know boys and girls with these names.
There was a McKinley in JJ's preschool - hate to break it to you. But I think I went to school with a boy McKinley. I don't remember the last name but I remember that was his name even though he went by Mac. But he was a chubby sort, if memory serves, and therefore, that is the first thing I think of.
Lucky for me I've never heard of a boy Rachel, a girl Nate and all Erins are spelled Aaron! And JJ is just plain old not his real name so I don't have to really worry about it.
My cousin named his little girl Mckinley, she is about 8mo old. I think he named her after Mt Mckinley.
Sorry. A couple in our ward named their little girl Mckinley. They named her that because the dad used to live in Alaska and did climb Mnt. Mckinley once. (It's a great story that he tells at firesides!) FYI, they named their little boy Summit.
Shano I went to high school and middle school with the only Mckinley I have ever known and she was a she.....
Just go with Cole! Very studdly and like we discussed goes well with Nancy's Jesse!
I'm from Scotland & McKinley is a very popular girls name there!!!
thanks to all of you for your input. chancho asked me why i kept working on this name if it is not even my favorite of the group. i don't know. but it is now evident that there are many girls with the name mckinley (even if 'mac' or 'mc' means 'son of') so, as sarah said, we could still name a boy that but people might always ask if he was a boy or girl if we just told the name. anyway, thank you all for your input with my naming decision!
not that you haven't heard enough but we have a cute female mckinley in our primary. :) sorry ...
I know two girl Mckinley's...but I think it is fairly useless to go down this road...we tried so hard to chose names we thought would be boys names and all of them but one I have heard used on girls! Now if you ever hear of a girl named Isaac I will be really surprised!
I know personally 2 little girls named McKinley. It is a cute name though no matter who it is for. All names almost are gender switched.
I think Becky Mitchells youngest girl is Mckinley. Sorry. :O(
In my old ward there was a girl named McKinley. She is about eleven I think
I like the Mac thing though Like MacCauley but I do know that girl so it did sound like a girl name to me too. I like the sound of it but still it rings girlish
unless you want to reinvent but he might have to suffer through that one Like a Leslie or an Aubrey which were originally boy names but commandeered and overtaken by girls. Same with Blair, etc
look it up on the social security website it ranks the years of popularity as a girl or boy name
sorry for so many comments but pss I still like Miles the best Cole I like but it is pretty common
Yes I know a girl named Mckinley. But don't let that stop you if you like it. One of my favorite boy names is Jamie, and I like Brice for a girl. I think the name Mckinley is great for a boy.
Sorry-my hubs has a cousin who named his daughter McKinley.
Not that you need this but there is a little Mckinley up the street and for some reason I want to call her Elizabeth, don't ask me why. Mckinley is too girly, most names that end in a y are too girly for me. Ask my Nick who I always call Nicky. Miles is a good one that has always been on my lists because it has a family connection.
I too know a girl named Mckinley she is four. I know why you are worried though. After I named our last boy Ashton someone told me they knew a girl named Ashton and it was quite disturbing to me. We all want our boys to sound manly. This is why I usually use last names for my boy's first names. They sound strong and manly to me.
Names are the worst! Especially with boys!! Girls are so much easier, you can go any direction with them. Boys on the other hand have to be something fitting for a baby, but strong enough to carry them through life and be respectable. Good luck! I know you will come up with something great. We had the hardest time naming Parker. It seriously took us a few days, I finally just had to make a decision and stick with it! I have a nephew named Kole and he is a stud muffin, so I'm biased, but I love that name! His name is actually Kolton, but they call him Kole most of the time. I'll keep thinking if there are any other names that jump out at me. Happy Holidays!!
I don't think it matters what the "research" says. McKinley is a fine and dignified name for a boy & a man. Go for it.
Love,
Jodi (which is also a "boy's name": Jody)
so I am late posting but if you want to go to a great web site to research names, boy or girl, how long they have been around go to this site http://www.babynamewizard.com click on name voyager and you can type in any name, it is so fun, try it, I did Mckinley for you and it was a boy name forever and ever but over the last several years it is only listed as being used as a girls name. But I always say, whatever someone names their baby you just end up loving it, so follow your heart.
