Molly the Babysitter

I will admit, it has been a bit of an adjustment becoming a "dog" family. Molly is huge and she can't help but smell somewhat like a dog, even when she's clean. Chancho was at first afraid he'd made a huge mistake in talking me into a dog, but I think (I hope) he is coming around. As I mentioned previously, I have never been very interested in animals. I have always felt that you should not be cruel to an animal. That certainly isn't right. And I don't really like anything dirty or smelly close to me (I tried vacuuming some hair off of Molly the other day with my Dust Buster. She allowed it but it didn't do much so I tried a to get out my Dyson and use a hose. She thought that was a bit absurd and quickly sauntered outside). Anyway, other than that, I really don't have strong feelings about animals. But since getting Molly I have been particularly interested in learning more about the significance of animals and their spirits and specifically about the beasts that John mentions in Revelations. I read an interesting article that spoke a little of this. Maggie, do you have any more info on this for me? You are my new scriptoral advisor!

Marlin K. Jensen (good friend of my parents, father of my current bishop, and General Authority) gave a talk on the manner of happiness and he had a section about animals. He said, " Nephi also records, 'We began to raise flocks, and herds, and animals of every kind.' This is an element of a happy life to which many will readily relate. Animals—be they horses, cats, dogs, hamsters, or turtles—touch us deeply and promote our emotional well-being. Given affection and care, they return affection and care generously and consistently. People whose lives include relationships with animals are usually happier. For me at least, heaven will not be heaven unless the animal kingdom is part of God’s kingdom."

So, I'm trying to give this my best shot and if it doesn't work out to have an animal in our family it is certainly due to us and not this particular animal! I feel that Molly has a very noble spirit and I am glad to have her in our home, even if it takes some adjusting and a Glade Plug-In. (Okay, serious question...what is your favorite kind of scent that I could get to put in my house? Meg, didn't you used to get something awesome from Pier 1 or something?)

I recently found out that not only is our Molly a champion herself but of a litter of 8 puppies, every single one went on to be a champion and of her two litters of single puppies, they each will most likely be champions as well. Her bloodlines and character are very strong. One member of our family decided tonight that he no longer likes Molly. Why is this? She has learned that when a child is told to go to bed, he is supposed to go to bed! I kept laughing because Loumy was in bed (across the hall from my room). Molly was in the front room lying down on her bed. Loumy kept turning on the light and playing. Each time he did, Molly would slowly get up and plod over to his door. She would then softly hit it with her paw, as if telling him, "You are supposed to be sleeping in there." Once he turned out the light, she would slowly haul herself back to her bed. A few minutes later I heard Loumy yell, "Mom! I don't like dogs anymore!" "Why not?" I called back. "Molly won't let me get another drink." Sure enough, she was just standing at his door because he was trying to come out. Loumy had already had a drink and gone to the bathroom and I'd told him not to get out again. He thought he could outwit his disabled Mom. But Molly knew better. It was late and the house was entirely dark. This little child needed to be safe in his bed and she wanted to make sure of it. All she did was stand there. If he had walked past her, I'm sure she would have just followed him to make sure he was safe and went back to bed, but finally he quit trying to get out and went to sleep.

Earlier I had allowed String Cheese and Deedle to fall asleep by me on my bed. They were feeling a bit neglected from me staying in bed all day so I let them. I heard Molly pacing in and out of their room. I finally called down and asked Chancho to put the sleeping girls in their beds so that Molly could get some rest. Once she was able to come in and see that they were in their safe places for the night, she, too, was able to sleep.

I love Molly....what a sweet huge creature! I love that she puts your kids to bed. My sister believes that having a dog in your home creates a balance of energy. So there you have it. Anyway, I really loved having Clair around, her poop, NOT so much. Good luck with the dog hair issue. I laughed out loud that she thought it absurd when you pulled out the Dyson and used it on her! Have you tried the Flo-Bee?
Shan, why is it that you have been in bed all day? I knew nothing of this and I am here to help if you need anything....call me.

I also admit to trying to use an upright vacuum on a dog, and was also unsuccessful.

I'm completely in love with Molly, as it sounds like she is in love with your children. They definitely have special spirits and they are always living to the "fulness of their creation". Molly can't be anything but "exactly obedient" to the laws of Dog.

Do you have carpet, hardwood, linoleum...?

For odor, I find the Ozium or something that actually removes stuff from the air is the only way to go. Big dog = big dog smell.

She might hate it, but we also find it really helpful to have our dogs groomed (read that "shaved"). The hair is shorter, so it doesn't have to shed so much. it's a summer haircut for sure.

Also, if she does shed (you haven't said she does, I'm just guessing she might) check her diet. A couple of vets have told us that food with corn in it makes the dog "blow coat" (a.k.a. 'shed') more because it metabolizes differently. We've found it to make a huge difference if we buy a food without corn (which is used as a cheap filler in dog food).

Again, LOVE MOLLY! Love that Loumy Lou KNOWS he should be in bed and that Molly's mere presence enforces that. LOVE that she probably wants in to play (pawing at the door) but that Loumy rightfully reads that as Molly nicely ratting him out.

Go Molly! If you start a NanaMolly fan club, let me know!

Man, this is a long comment. :)

I love all this baby-sitterness. It is freakin' awesome. Also, about animals, Abe used to always be afraid in his room at night until he got his little hamster -- then no more fears. Also, what is a Dyson. I've never heard of that word before and now I've seen it twice today -- once on your blog and once on Tasha's.

P.S. My neighbor vacuums her dog every day. He just lies there like "sheesh"

Oh, Sweet Molly! How could any NOT love her...except for the smell, and the deposits on the grass, and the long hair! But, you've a choice pet there, and your children will be so glad she is part of their lives!
Odor: I agree with Lori - Ozium is the best. It truly does not just cover up with a flowery smell, though it does come in orange, and well as regular. Also, a little goes a long way. I get mine at Wal-mart.
The shorter hair cut, and brushing regularly help with shedding and smell. And, the food they eat does indeed make a difference. Table scraps and too many treats can give a dog 'gas'!
There is a little tool called a 'Rubba Scrubba'. it is a brush thing with plastic bristles. It has been touted as being good for sweeping up crumbs, pet hair, etc. off carpets, couches, car seats. It gets used to brush pets, then washed, and used to clean the couch. If you think that might be useful, you can go to www.flylady.net, and check out the fly shop...for the Rubba Scrubba.

Comments on the other part of the post will need to wait until I've done my Sunday School lesson for tomorrow...I'll be in touch.

haha. thanks, jami. if you ever see a huge, panting crate at your front door, you'll know who its from.

thanks for all the great advice, Lori. What is Ozium? Where do I find something like that? Also glad to know that I am not the only one who has tried a vacuum on a dog. :) We actually had Molly groomed yesterday and she did extremely well. The entire staff at the Riverdale PetSmart have become her fans. I also appreciated that quote because she is fulfilling the measure of her creation and that is awesome.
Re. food, luckily Chancho did a lot of research and I think we have a really good one because it has hardly any fillers and it supposed to be really good for her coat and everything. She just sheds once per year, which is Spring time, but it hasn't been too bad. Anyway, another good thing about the food is that because it is really good quality she doesn't need to eat as much which also means less you-know-what.
We have carpet and tile. It hasn't been hard to keep clean. It was funny because actually the second day she was home I saw a huge mess on the floor and was all upset--come to find out that it was the neighbor boy that spread peanut butter on our carpet, not Molly at all.
Whew...now that was a long comment response! I am glad that you have had a big dog and currently have dogs. Can I keep coming to you for advice?

P, I was trying SO hard to remember the name of the Flo-Bee! Thanks for thinking like me and remembering it.

Nancy, a Dyson is the name of the coollest vacuum in the world. I bought mine off e-bay from somebody that sent it to me before i even paid for it and i guarantee he stole it but i didn't know what else to do but pay him anyway because i didn't know how to send it back. weird. but i really do love my vacuum.

have you shown Mike the pics of my dog? I bet mike feels like Marlin Jensen. Well, okay, I know he does.

Also, interesting what you said about Abe because tonight in the car (why always in the car?) SC says to me, "Mom, do you still have bad dreams?" "Sometimes, but not a lot." "I hardly ever have bad dreams any more. I think its because we have Molly so I know nothing bad is ever going to happen."

Maggie, thanks for the great advice! Ozium found in the pet section or the cleaning section?

Culligula suggests you put a barrel around Molly's neck & throw one of your kids in a snow bank & see if she can find them.
You're selling your house? Quoi? Why? When? What?! I would LOVE to have your kids at my school. I'm finishing my 3rd car garage upstairs. crazy, I know.

I've always felt the same exact way about pets and animals...and I must admit I've never taken a spirtual approach at all to the matter, but you definitely bring up an interesting point in doing so. Ana LOVES animals and learns everything about every species possible. Lately, her obsession has been with hummingbirds.

For some reason, that huge dog looks so much cozier to me than any other pet I've ever seen. And I love the story about Loumy, of course.

Shan i love that post! And I am so glad how great Molly is. Its so cool to watch those big beautiful dogs baby sit. Moses takes his job very seriously when the kids are outside if they a spread out he gets where he can see all of them. And If I come out then he plays and runs around. The second I go in he is back to baby sitter duty. We need to get Mose and Molly together. Ramses is coming soon. I think they are droppping him off so we don't have to go get him. It would be fun to go see Nancy though at the same time. yadee yadee yadee...Love ya

thanks for the comment, jess. in case you didn't notice, i "tagged" you on the book thing so you're going to have to start a blog.

Dearest Perla.

Yes, you know me - well, kinda. I gradeeated with Aaron in 89 so yes, you kinda know me. This is how we are connected - my brother is Nancy's sister-in-law's husband. So Nancy and I are now tight and all - through the blessed blog. When my brother told me that Nancy was (IS) an Allred I have to admit that I did some lurking but couldn't quite figure things out. It wasn't until Nancy posted about you that I finally figured out exactly who you were - your dang code words had me all perplexed and unsure of my PI skills.

I just answered your question about my hubs on N's blog because I forgot that it was your question. But no, he wasn't at OHS. Just me.

I think it is so fun to hook up with people through the blog - both strangers and like you, semi-strangers. You seem like you have seen a lot of adventure in the past 20 years! And it seems to me that it has made you a very strong woman - but you were probably already all that and I just didn't know! That's the beauty of time - it changes us and hopefully for the better.

And by the way - I LOVE the new wig and thought it was beautiful that you would blog about it. I love writing on my blog. I feel like I have no secrets and that it makes me a more honest and defined person to do so. I sensed that from your blog about your wigs. Good for you!

And the dog - okay that is a beastly animal. My kids would not be able to play at your house because they would be afraid. My second son wants a dog so bad but it is funny because he is afraid of them in reality. We do stuffed webkinz. I think your dog would put him and mostly me over the edge.

You vaccumed him? Really? That cracked me up! And my Dyson would not work I would have moved onto the Shop Vac! And I think I would rub him down with dryer sheets every night because those seem to take the stink out of suitcases. I'll let you know if I can think of anymore things I would do to make a dog less of a dog.

I'm not a big dog fan. You are a good woman and you should remind your husband that he is very, very lucky.

So glad we can be legal friends. And that we don't have to lurk any more! While I'm sure this is not the first time we have met - it is a pleasure to meet you officially!
