When my dad was a little boy he had a crush on Shirley Temple. He had a special cup with a picture of Shirley's face at the bottom of it. Those beloved curls and that smile encouraged him to finish his milk regularly. In fact, I may just have found the photo used in advertising the sale of those cups. Does this look familiar, Gordy Boy? As a child I was always amazed and a bit jealous of that gorgeous, singing, dancing, curly-headed little thing. I loved her movies, especially Heidi.
The other night Deedle and String Cheese asked me to do their hair in sponge curlers. I happily rolled their hair after their baths. At first they didn't like the idea of sleeping on the curlers, but got over it quite quickly, especially knowing how cute their hair would look in the morning. Regrettably, when I took the curlers out the following day, they both had small, blond fros. SC looked at herself, touched around the edges of the puff and said, "Uh...I don't like it."
Well, I did! Once I picked through the curls a bit, they loosened up some and I had two tiny Shirley Temples of my own!!! I loved the curls so much that I have now left their hair unwashed for four days! Their hair is starting to get ratty in the back, so I guess I'll have to give in and wash it tomorrow, but I have delayed because I don't think they will let me do it again any time soon.
Saturday and today, Deedle was in a performing sort of mood. I took the opportunity to catch her singing some of her favorite songs. She may not possess the natural ability of Shirley Temple. Maybe she doesn't look at the camera or hold still for one tiny second or remember what her hands are supposed to be doing and she may occasionally zone out and forget where she is and why there is a strange bald woman in front of her with a camera, but she has a pretty good little memory and I absolutely adore her. Shirley T, you may be an Academy Award winning, Ambassador living, good will giving, iconic child star; but in my mind, you've got nothing on Deedsy!

Ohh I forgot about that awesome second song and how I want a copy of it. I love how she wanders over to the piano and looks at something for a minute. That is totally Daisy . .. talking or singing you something and then just noticing some little thing and forgetting all about what she is doing for a moment. Also, have you ever thought that Deedle looks a little like London? And, did you know Daisy is Doodle? Lastly, I must tell you, that all I could think of during this post was about the time you put my hair in those wire things (the same things we made the our witch's bodies out of -- is that pipe cleaner?) 'cause you heard it would be so cute and then all you guys could do was laugh your head off at me while I was super mad and almost to tears becasue I looked like an idiot the next morning. Seriously, who would have ever imagined my hair could kink so tight and crazy.
Those curls have bounce! They look perfect! I miss the old sponge curlers. Nothing does curl quite like they do.
I love those videos! Kids always seem to be a tad shy when you first turn a camera on, then they grow comfortable, then they immediately want to see the video afterwards. Ana did the same thing (even moreso when she was younger).
Thanks for the comments, as always, Jessica.
Nancy, yes, I too thought of that day. You were so angry and I just wanted you to enjoy the sadness of it all--how much time I had put into getting them in your hair, how you had to have them in your hair, and then the absurd possibility that your hair could even do that! That is why we laughed. I am not sure if you understood what I knew--all we had to do was wet your hair and the curl (if you can call it that--whew!) would be gone. So sad and so funny. I am sorry it was so traumatic for you!
Nancy and I think a lot alike because I too, thought it was funny that she went to the piano in an "oh, this is dusty" sorta way .... not that I thought it looked dusty but that's what it looked like. My kids fancy seeing their names written in dust on my piano and believe me, they have many opportunities.
What a cutie-pie! She looks like a Deedle. I was kinda hoping though that that big dog a yours would come meandering into the video so I could see its hugeness. How's that going anyway?
That Deedle is so cute. She looks a lot like you. I especially liked when she put her arms over head and twirled for a minute. It's so nice to have video to really catch their personalities.
When I moved to my small town, I learned the "real" way to get those curls: SOCKS.
Yep, twist the wet hair around a sock and tie the ends together. They are softer to sleep on and you don't have as much breakage. You can do as few or as many as you want depending on how much curl you're after.
I thought it was hysterical when the dance teacher told me how to do my daughters hair "right" - I thought she was joking. It works, though, quite well!
Cute, cute kids you have!
Man that is so hillarious. maybe you could post Nancy's hair with the soft pipe cleaners! HAH!!!!
When I was little I had curls like that and people would say I looked like Shirley T. I love that picture! Swissy made me play Deedles video over and over so she could enjoy it numerous times.
P.S. I have had many a traumatic experiences with sponge curlers. Nacho was making me laugh about being infuriated/humiliated with her jerry curls!!
My hair was already a little curly/wavy so anytime I did them in curlers it just went to crazy curls and frizz and I always hated it and wet it down
Oh I have been away too long from my little blogging friends! Deedsey is so so cool...I especially loved her blond fro and the zoning out when singing! Too cute!
